[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Jin-hyung] The Yeongsangang River Basin Environmental Office will hold a meeting on the 6th at Sono Calm in Yeosu City to prevent chemical accidents and ensure the safety of workers, targeting subcontractors (partner companies handling business sites) in the Gwangyang Bay area.
Recently, there have been casualties due to explosions during work at Yeocheon NCC and Ilsan Industry in the Gwangyang Bay area, increasing the need to ensure the safety of on-site workers. In particular, a meeting was held targeting subcontractors who are directly exposed to damage in case of accidents due to the "outsourcing of risk," to check safety issues on site and provide an opportunity to enhance understanding of related systems such as the Serious Accidents Punishment Act.
About 60 people, including managers of 26 subcontractors, will attend the meeting, where the Yeongsangang Office will share cases of chemical accidents involving subcontractors under its jurisdiction, and the Ministry of Employment and Labor will provide education for practical chemical accident prevention, including explanations of the Serious Accidents Punishment Act and listening to subcontractors' suggestions to raise awareness of precautions when handling hazardous chemicals and related laws.
In particular, anonymous questionnaires and suggestions were collected in advance to increase subcontractors' interest and gather the opinions of on-site workers as much as possible.
The Yeongsangang Office plans to review safety measures for on-site workers along with the management of existing hazardous chemical handling facilities based on this meeting.
Kim Seung-hee, head of the Yeongsangang River Basin Environmental Office, stated, "This meeting will be a good opportunity to discuss effective chemical accident prevention measures by collecting realistic difficulties and opinions from workers."
