[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Jin-hyung] Korea Railroad Corporation (KORAIL) Gwangju Jeonnam Headquarters has designated the period until the 10th as the intensive safety management period for the Gyeongjeon Line railroad crossing in preparation for the cherry blossom blooming season along the Dongcheon Stream in Suncheon. Special measures are being implemented to prevent serious accidents for citizens and tourists visiting this area.

The location in question is the Gyeongjeon Line railroad near Jangdae Park in Suncheon (between Suncheon Bridge and Pungdeok Bridge), specifically the Suncheoncheon Bridge crossing Dongcheon Stream and the Jogok 1 and 2 crossings at both ends. This area is known for a high risk of train contact accidents involving spring visitors every year.

KORAIL has deployed safety management personnel to prevent accidents caused by unauthorized entry onto the tracks for reasons such as crossing the railroad during train operation times or taking photographs.

Not only during this blooming season but also throughout the year, citizens enjoying walks frequently use this area, and with the increase in visitors following the relaxation of COVID-19 quarantine guidelines, there is concern that the risk of accidents may also rise.

A KORAIL official stated, “To protect precious lives from unexpected accidents, mature civic awareness and a culture of safety are necessary,” adding, “We plan to discuss fundamental safety measures such as closing the crossing and establishing detour walkways with local governments.”
