[Asia Economy Reporter Hyunji Kwon] In a hypothetical gubernatorial race in Gyeonggi Province between Ahn Min-seok of the Democratic Party of Korea and former lawmaker Yoo Seung-min of the People Power Party, Yoo led Ahn by a significant margin beyond the margin of error.

On the 4th, Asia Economy commissioned Realmeter to conduct a public opinion poll from April 1 to 2 targeting 1,009 men and women aged 18 and older residing in Gyeonggi Province (90% mobile, 10% landline, automated response). The results showed Yoo with a support rate of 43.4% and Ahn with 28.4%, giving Yoo a lead of 15 percentage points, which is outside the margin of error.

Ahn showed strong support among the 40s (37.4%) and 50s (35.1%) age groups, while Yoo was dominant among the youth aged 18-29 (51.6%) and those aged 60 and above (49.1%).

By party support, 57.5% of Democratic Party supporters expressed their intention to vote for Ahn, while Yoo received 69.1% support from People Power Party supporters. Among supporters of the People’s Party, 59.0% said they would vote for Yoo, indicating his strong appeal to centrist voters.

The proportion of undecided voters who either did not support either candidate (12.9%) or were unsure (4.0%) was 16.9%.

This survey was conducted by Realmeter on behalf of Asia Economy from April 1 (Friday) to April 2 (Saturday). Calls were attempted to 77,535 eligible voters aged 18 and older in Gyeonggi Province, with a final 1,009 respondents completing the survey, resulting in a response rate of 1.3%. The survey used an automated response method with 90% mobile and 10% landline calls, employing a random digit dialing sampling frame. Statistical adjustments were made using rim weighting based on gender, age group, and region according to the Ministry of the Interior and Safety’s resident registration population statistics as of the end of February 2022. The sampling error is ±3.1 percentage points at a 95% confidence level.
