[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Yong-woo] Ulsan City, in collaboration with district and county offices, will conduct shellfish toxin collection inspections on seafood from March to June to ensure safety management during the spring season.

The collection and inspection will be carried out by joint inspection teams from Ulsan City and district/county offices, who will collect seafood (shellfish and tunicates) distributed through wholesale markets and suppliers to marts, and send them to the Hazardous Substances Analysis Division at the Busan Regional Food and Drug Safety Administration Testing and Analysis Center for testing.

The collected items include 30 cases of distributed shellfish and tunicates such as clams and sea squirts.

Ulsan City plans to conduct follow-up investigations and immediately recall and dispose of any seafood exceeding the allowable limits, thereby fundamentally blocking its distribution.

Last year, shellfish toxin inspections were conducted on a total of 35 cases including clams and sea squirts, all of which were found to be safe.

An official from Ulsan City stated, “Shellfish toxins are not broken down by refrigeration, freezing, heating, or cooking, so we hope that individuals do not arbitrarily collect and consume seafood from the seaside.”

Following this inspection, Ulsan City plans to continuously conduct seafood safety inspections including Vibrio bacteria safety management in summer (June to October), seafood collection and inspection during the Chuseok holiday peak season (August), collection and inspection of high-consumption seafood during the kimchi-making season (November), and radiation collection and inspection (year-round).
