[Asia Economy Reporter Yoo Je-hoon] As the enforcement of the Serious Accident Punishment Act approaches on the 27th, Hyundai Motor Company and Kia have each established a Chief Safety Officer (CSO) position.
According to industry sources on the 24th, Hyundai Motor and Kia recently appointed Vice President Lee Dong-seok and Vice President & CEO Choi Jun-young as CSOs, respectively. Both vice presidents will serve as management executives overseeing the safety management organizations of Hyundai Motor and Kia.
Both vice presidents are executives in charge of domestic production. Vice President Lee was assigned to oversee domestic factory operations following the resignation of former CEO Ha Eon-tae during last year's regular executive reshuffle, while Vice President Choi has held various positions including General Manager of the Gwangju Plant's General Affairs and Safety Office, Head of Labor Support Division, and Head of the Management Support Headquarters as the person responsible for domestic production.
Ahead of the enforcement of the Serious Accident Punishment Act, which strengthens the primary contractor's responsibility for serious safety accidents and stipulates punishment if a management executive is found to have violated safety and health obligations resulting in a serious industrial accident, Hyundai Motor and Kia have been expanding their organizations and personnel to reinforce on-site safety management.
