[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Songpa-gu (Mayor Park Seong-su)'s 'Urban Brand (CI) and Public Design Color Manual' won the Green Award, an excellence award in the space and environment category, at the 19th Korea Color Awards hosted by the Korea Color Society on December 17.

Under Mayor Park Seong-su's vision of 'Songpa Leading Seoul,' Songpa-gu has made various attempts to express the identity of its five major district administration goals?▲Future Industrial City ▲Top Education City ▲Premium Residential City ▲Cultural Tourism City ▲Communication Plus City?through public design.

In 2020, while developing a new urban brand (CI), Songpa-gu selected 10 exclusive colors that reflect the spatial and environmental characteristics of Songpa-gu, where nature, culture, tradition, and modernity harmonize. Using sky blue and blue as the main colors in Songpa-gu's representative logo, the district utilizes a range of stylish colors from light green to orange in promotions and publicity materials to deliver various district administration information clearly and cohesively. These efforts and achievements were recognized with the Green Award in the space and environment category at the Korea Color Awards.

Mayor Park Seong-su said, "We developed exclusive colors aiming to connect landmarks with different characteristics and histories, such as Songpa Dullegil, the Hanseong Baekje Cultural Festival, and Olympic Park, within the Songpa-gu urban brand," adding, "We will continue to enhance Songpa's value with differentiated public design from other cities."

The Korea Color Awards is the only domestic color-related contest hosted by the Korea Color Society and sponsored by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, aiming to promote the development of color culture and enhance professionalism in the color industry. Every year, excellent cases related to color in 11 categories such as landscape, visual, and cultural content are selected and awarded Red (Innovation), Green (Space & Environment), and Blue (Technology) awards.

Seongdong-gu (Mayor Jung Won-oh) has installed a total of 23 'IoT Paper Pack Recycling Bins' throughout the district, enabling easy disposal of paper packs anywhere.

The 'IoT Paper Pack Recycling Bin' is a device based on the Internet of Things (IoT) that allows recycling separation through a recycling bin connected to an application (App).

When a paper pack that meets the recycling separation standards is scanned on the barcode connected to the device, points are accumulated through the app. Ten points are earned per paper pack, and when 10 paper packs are disposed of, they can be exchanged for one 200ml milk. Points can be exchanged for rewards such as milk, bottled water, and pizza in the app's shopping mall.

After a pilot operation of four locations in 2019, the district added 10 more locations last year. The total weight of about 35,000 paper packs collected from nearly 5,000 users exceeds 6 tons. Approximately 2,000 reward items have been exchanged using accumulated points.

In response to the continuously increasing paper pack collection rate, the district added nine more bins this month at community centers, district libraries, and Hanyang University. Through a total of 23 paper pack recycling bin locations, the district plans to actively encourage participation from residents and users of multi-use facilities.

A district official explained that paper packs, whose main material is high-quality pulp, require a separate recycling process but are often treated as general waste due to improper separation. The additional installation of IoT paper pack recycling bins is expected to play a significant role in increasing the collection rate.

Previously, as a direct effect of various resource recycling policies such as recycling stations, the district improved the recycling sorting rate by 17 percentage points compared to the previous year. Over the past year, through the recycling station project, the district collected 250 tons of transparent PET bottles and recyclables recognized for top quality by recycling processing companies and sold them at high prices. Last month, the district actively promoted ESG administration by urging 28 domestic companies to use eco-friendly PET bottle labels.

Jung Won-oh, Mayor of Seongdong-gu, said, "We hope residents actively use the recycling bins prepared to easily separate paper packs in daily life," adding, "We will continue to establish a proper recycling separation culture and secure high-quality recyclable resources to increase the resource circulation rate."
