[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Seryeong] Due to the resurgence of COVID-19 and the increase in Omicron infections, Pohang City in Gyeongbuk is canceling the official event of the 24th Homigot Korean Ethnic Sunrise Festival.
The Homigot Sunrise Plaza will be closed and all plaza entrances will be fully restricted for two days, from December 31, the last day of this year, to January 1 of next year.
Although the official event is canceled, for citizens and tourists, the local cable broadcasting station and YouTube channel will provide real-time broadcasts of New Year's greetings, four-character idiom announcements, and sunrise scenes.
The sunrise, which will be the most regrettable event for those unable to attend in person, will be broadcast simultaneously from Homigot and Hwanho Park Space Walk.
A city official said, "This decision was made inevitably to prevent the spread of COVID-19 within the region and to ensure a safe New Year's celebration for citizens," adding, "We hope people will enjoy the Homigot sunrise through TV broadcasts and YouTube channels at home."
