[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Heung-soon] Hanwha Defense announced on the 30th that it will pioneer new markets in the African defense industry at the Egypt Defense Expo (EDEX 2021) held in Cairo, Egypt, until the 2nd of next month.
Started in 2018, the EDEX exhibition is the largest defense exhibition in the African region and is now in its second year. This year, about 400 defense companies from 42 countries around the world are expected to participate.
At this exhibition, Hanwha Defense will showcase its advanced defense technology by exhibiting its main ground weapon system, the K9 self-propelled howitzer, and the remotely controlled weapon system (RCWS) developed independently for ground combat systems. Additionally, the 'Redback' armored vehicle, which was selected as the final candidate for the Australian Army's future infantry fighting vehicle acquisition project, will be introduced to the African and Middle Eastern markets.
The K9 self-propelled howitzer is a proven solution that has been exported since 2001 to six countries including Turkey, Poland, Finland, India, Norway, and Estonia, with nearly 600 units operated worldwide. It was also selected last year as the preferred equipment for the Australian Army's self-propelled howitzer project.
The RCWS, developed independently by Hanwha Defense, is an 'untact' (contactless) weapon system mounted on various ground equipment such as ships, armored vehicles, self-propelled howitzers, tactical vehicles, and tanks. Since the weapons mounted outside the equipment are operated remotely from inside the ship or vehicle, it can safely protect friendly crew members even under heavy enemy attacks.
The Redback armored vehicle, named after the red-backed spider native to Australia, is a 5th generation infantry fighting vehicle developed by Hanwha Defense in collaboration with global defense companies from Israel, Australia, and Canada. It features world-class special protection design and reinforced structure. Cutting-edge technologies such as composite rubber tracks, the 'Iron Vision' helmet display function, and the 'Iron Fist' active protection system are integrated.
Son Jae-il, CEO of Hanwha Defense, said, "We are working with our government to globalize 'K-Defense,' including entering the African defense market," and added, "To maintain the world’s number one position of K-Defense representative weapon systems, we will continue to expand performance improvements and advanced technology research and development activities."
