[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Hye-min] The National Intelligence Service (NIS) has stated that the American media report claiming that Kim Yo-jong, Deputy Director of the Workers' Party, ousted North Korean State Affairs Commission Chairman Kim Jong-un through a coup is not true.
On the 24th, the NIS responded to the American tabloid magazine Globe's report by saying, "It is completely untrue."
Earlier, Globe reported in its latest issue on the 23rd (local time), citing U.S. intelligence sources, that "Kim Jong-un was killed by Kim Yo-jong, who staged a secret coup between May 6 and June 5."
Globe claimed, "Kim Jong-un, who had not appeared in public since June, suddenly appeared at the North Korean regime's founding anniversary event on the 9th of last month, but this was a body double." The media cited a U.S. Department of Defense official's statement, reporting that "facial recognition technology confirmed that the person attending the September regime founding anniversary event was not Kim Jong-un."
In response, the NIS issued a statement that afternoon declaring, "This is completely untrue."
In July, when suspicions spread online that Kim Pyong-il, Kim Jong-un's uncle and former ambassador to the Czech Republic, had staged a coup, the NIS dismissed the claims as "unfounded."
