[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yoon Jamin] The Gwangsan District Council of Gwangju Metropolitan City (Chairman Lee Young-hoon) announced on the 12th that it adopted the "Resolution Urging the Declaration of the End of the War and the Peace Agreement for Peace on the Korean Peninsula," which was proposed by Representative Kim Mi-young (proportional representation) at the 1st plenary session of the 268th extraordinary meeting.
The resolution urges the parties involved in the Korean War?South Korea, North Korea, the United States, and China?to end the armistice system and implement a peace agreement declaration expressing their joint will for peace on the Korean Peninsula.
It states that although the April 27, 2018 Panmunjom Declaration and the North Korea-U.S. summits were joint efforts and expressions of will among related countries to establish a peace regime, three years later, hopes for a peace agreement have faded, and the U.S.-China hegemonic rivalry is forcing confrontation between the two Koreas.
The council members emphasized through the resolution that "the Korean Peninsula faces a high risk of becoming a powder keg due to internal ethnic conflicts and the confrontation of major powers competing for hegemony in the 21st-century Northeast Asia era," and stressed that "the declaration of the end of the war and the peace agreement must lead peace on the Korean Peninsula and in Northeast Asia."
They also urged, "The government should return to the spirit of the April 27 Panmunjom Declaration, resume inter-Korean dialogue, and the National Assembly, regardless of party lines, should actively engage in the declaration of the end of the war and the peace agreement for peace."
Representative Kim Mi-young said, "Divided into North and South, repeating reconciliation and conflict for over 70 years, the Korean Peninsula remains a divided country. Although expectations for restoring relations rose after North Korea's communication network was restored in July, the communication was cut off again due to joint South Korea-U.S. military exercises," adding, "The government should take an active stance to restore communication lines, create an environment to start dialogue, and actively pursue the declaration of the end of the war and the peace agreement on the Korean Peninsula."
The adopted resolution will be delivered to the Blue House, the National Assembly, and the Ministry of Unification.
