[Asia Economy Reporter Baek Kyunghwan] The High-ranking Officials' Crime Investigation Unit (HCIC) held a personnel committee meeting and recommended candidates for new prosecutors to the President.

On the 1st, the HCIC held its 5th personnel committee meeting from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Government Gwacheon Complex to fill two chief prosecutor positions and eight regular prosecutor positions. The HCIC stated, "In accordance with personnel regulations, we decided to recommend up to twice the number of planned appointments, within 20 candidates," but did not disclose the exact number of recommendations, which is known to be in the low teens.

According to the HCIC Act, HCIC prosecutors are finally appointed by the President after recommendations from the personnel committee. The committee can recommend up to twice the number of planned appointments.

In the first recruitment of prosecutors in April, the HCIC selected 13 candidates, about half of the total quota (23, excluding the head and deputy head). The HCIC plans to fill the remaining 10 positions (2 chief prosecutors and 8 regular prosecutors). Until last month, candidates were narrowed down to 3 chief prosecutors and 24 regular prosecutors through document screening and interviews. Among these, the final candidates will be selected within twice the number of planned appointments and recommended to the President. The final appointments are expected to be made within this month.

In his opening remarks at the personnel committee meeting, HCIC Chief Kim Jin-wook said, "I hope this will be a time to share opinions on who is suitable from the perspective of discovering substantive truth and protecting the human rights of those involved in cases," adding, "I hope to fill the prosecutor quota and accelerate investigations."
