[Imsil=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Nosik] Imsil-gun, Jeonbuk, is accelerating a pilot project to establish subtropical fruit orchards, including the new income crop Apple Mango, in preparation for climate change.

According to the county on the 14th, a pilot project to introduce subtropical fruits is underway to discover new income crops for farms and strengthen competitiveness in line with climate warming and changes in consumer patterns.

Recently, Korea's climate has shown signs of warming, with the average temperature rising by about 1.7℃ over the past 100 years.

Accordingly, the main production areas for horticultural crops are gradually moving northward, and the cultivation of subtropical crops such as citrus and mangoes is increasing even in inland areas.

In response to this trend, the county selected three farms with facility greenhouses last year and has been supporting the cultivation of subtropical fruits such as Apple Mango, papaya, and banana.

By providing seedlings, potting soil, and infrastructure construction, a 3,995㎡ cultivation site was established, and regional adaptation tests are being conducted.

Although consumer preference for subtropical fruits is increasing, it is judged that suitable varieties and cultivation techniques for the local environment have not been sufficiently established.

Therefore, the county is intensifying efforts to create a stable production base by conducting on-site consulting for each growth stage of crops such as Apple Mango.

In addition, in cooperation with the Rural Development Administration and the Provincial Agricultural Research and Extension Services, a network for sharing cultivation techniques among farms is being established to develop high-quality subtropical crop production technologies.

Based on the established cultivation techniques, the county plans to foster experiential subtropical crop farms for consumers both inside and outside the region.

County Governor Shim Min said, “We will systematically nurture new income crops suitable for the local agricultural environment and seek ways to provide stable support. We will make multifaceted efforts to actively respond to climate change and increase farm income.”
