[Asia Economy Reporter Kang Nahum] In the first half of this year, Koreans spent the most time on the social application (app) 'YouTube,' made the highest expenditures on 'KakaoTalk,' and downloaded 'Danggeun Market' the most.
Mobile data and analytics platform App Annie released a report titled 'The Evolution of Social Media Apps' on the 8th, containing these findings.
According to the report, Koreans spent $123 million (approximately 140 billion KRW) on social apps in the first half of this year, ranking fifth worldwide in spending. This represents a 30% annual growth rate. The top four countries were the United States, Japan, China, and Saudi Arabia, respectively.
From 2010 to the first half of this year, Koreans downloaded social apps 1.644 billion times and spent $1.022 billion (approximately 1.2 trillion KRW) on them.
The top three apps by usage time in the first half of this year were YouTube, KakaoTalk, and Facebook. Notably, the average monthly usage time of YouTube among Koreans was found to be 39 hours.
In terms of consumer spending on social apps, KakaoTalk has maintained the undisputed first place for the past 10 years. YouTube ranked second, and 'Watcha' took third place.
By downloads, Danggeun Market, which debuted at fourth place in 2019, ranked first again in the first half of this year following last year, with Netflix and KakaoTalk following behind.
Since the fourth quarter of 2010 until now, 74 billion social app downloads have been recorded worldwide, with cumulative consumer spending reaching $22.2 billion (approximately 22.8 trillion KRW).
Global downloads of social apps in the first half of this year reached 9.2 billion, and consumer spending was $3.2 billion, showing a 50% annual growth rate. During the same period, global social app usage time totaled 740 billion hours, accounting for 44% of total mobile usage time.
App Annie analyzed apps in the social, communication, photo and video, and entertainment categories in this report, excluding dating, browser, email, antivirus, and voicemail apps.
