[Asia Economy Reporter Hyungsoo Park] The Daewoo Construction Labor Union has canceled its general strike plan after reaching an agreement on wage negotiations with management.
The union stated, "On the 13th, through the deliberation and resolution of the Executive Committee, which was delegated the right to negotiate wages at the delegates' meeting, we dramatically concluded the wage negotiations."
The labor and management agreed to increase the base salary by an average of 6.9%. They decided to apply differential rates by rank: 2.5% for Managers, 5.5% for Deputy General Managers, 9.0% for Section Chiefs, 10.0% for Assistant Managers, and 5.0% for Staff.
The union explained, "The main focus of the wage agreement is to secure wage competitiveness for the Section Chief and Assistant Manager ranks, where the wage gap compared to competitors has significantly widened," adding, "This is to prevent the ongoing rush of resignations since last year."
Labor and management also agreed to raise the minimum annual salary by rank, which had not been adjusted once in the past five years since the new wage system was restructured, by an average of 4.9%.
However, the union decided to continue its struggle related to the 'unfair sale' separately from the wage negotiation agreement. They claim that the consortium led by Jungheung Construction, selected as the preferred bidder for Daewoo Construction, violated normal procedures and conducted an unfair re-bidding process.
