[Asia Economy (Suwon) = Reporter Lee Young-gyu] Gyeonggi Province is extending the usage period of the dormitory at Kyonggi University, which is being used as a COVID-19 residential treatment center.
On the 13th, Gyeonggi Province announced that it had decided to extend the usage period of the Kyonggi University dormitory, which is operating as the 14th COVID-19 residential treatment center.
Earlier, the province requested the university to cooperate in extending the usage period of the residential treatment center, and Kyonggi University reached a consensus to extend it after final consultations among the faculty council, the staff union, and the student council.
Accordingly, the usage period of the Kyonggi University dormitory, the 14th residential treatment center of Gyeonggi Province, was extended from the original August 20 to September 30.
A provincial official said, "We thank the students and staff of Kyonggi University for making another difficult decision following last winter," and added, "We will do our best to ensure that students do not experience inconvenience, including promoting the extension of the usage period of alternative accommodations such as the Veterans Research Institute."
The Kyonggi University dormitory opened as the 10th residential treatment center on December 17 last year and treated 1,954 mild COVID-19 patients until January 28 this year. However, as the 4th COVID-19 wave began, it was reopened as the 14th residential treatment center on the 14th of last month, and 3,181 mild patients were admitted until the 12th.
As of midnight on the 13th, Gyeonggi Province is operating a total of 4,212 beds across 11 residential treatment centers, including the Kyonggi University dormitory, Icheon Education Training Institute, and Goyang Samsung Fire & Marine Insurance Global Campus.
