[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Seo Young-seo] A carcass of a finless porpoise, a marine protected species, was found near the Naebang Breakwater on Heuksando Island, Sinan-gun, Jeollanam-do.


According to Mokpo Coast Guard Station (Chief Im Jae-soo) on the 10th, a report was received at 2:21 PM on the 9th about a finless porpoise carcass near the Naebang Breakwater on Heuksando Island, Sinan-gun.


The discovered finless porpoise measured approximately 170 cm in length and 86 cm in girth, and no signs of illegal capture were found. It was handed over to the local government for processing in accordance with the "Notice on Whale Resources."


Meanwhile, the finless porpoise has recently experienced a rapid decline in population and is listed under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), receiving protection.


Domestically, it is also designated as a marine protected species, and the capture, distribution, and sale of finless porpoises are prohibited.


A Mokpo Coast Guard official urged, "If a finless porpoise is caught in fishing nets during operations or if a finless porpoise carcass is found along the coast, please report it to the Coast Guard."
