[Asia Economy Reporter Han Jinju] The Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Environment will start the '2021 Environmental Vacation Project' from the 27th to enable elementary and middle school students to receive climate and environmental experiential education remotely.
Until now, the Environmental Vacation Project was mainly conducted through on-site experiential education, but it was converted to a non-face-to-face format starting last year. This year, a 'Environmental Vacation Exploration Activity' incorporating the metaverse has been added to provide experiential education similar to in-person environments.
The 'Environmental Vacation Exploration Activity' will be held in a metaverse composed of schools, the sea, and forests from the 27th until August 31st. Any elementary or middle school student who wishes to participate can join. Students watch quest videos on YouTube and participate in tasks within the metaverse. By downloading the Zepeto app, students perform environmental tasks and experiential activities using characters they create themselves.
Various tasks include taking certified photos of school solar power generators, sorting marine litter, finding wind turbines, and identifying causes of forest destruction. Besides virtual space exploration activities, students can also engage in experiential activities such as playing in the school playground or catching balloons on the beach.
The online Environmental Vacation Camp will be held four times from the 27th to August 6th for 200 elementary and middle school students. Among students participating in the '2021 Environmental Diary Writing,' participants were pre-selected based on high scores in an environmental quiz. Groups of 5 to 8 students are paired with university student mentors who have experience in environmental education to carry out Environmental Vacation learning activities.
Using experience kits, students perform activities related to renewable energy and carbon neutrality or explore waste recycling methods based on problem-based learning (PBL). Students who submit the '2021 Environmental Vacation Booklet' through prior application at the school or individual level will receive certificates after evaluation.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Education Yoo Eun-hye said, "Through this online camp, I expect students to collaborate with friends to solve problems and to have their questions about environment-related careers answered with university student mentors." She added, "I hope that what they learn and feel during this process will lead to actions for carbon neutrality in their daily lives."
