[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yoon Jamin] The Gwangju Metropolitan Council (Chairman Kim Yongjip) announced on the 12th that it held the ‘Gwangju Metropolitan Council 76th Student Mock Council’ for students of Suwan Hana Middle School in the main assembly hall.
This student mock council involved 17 students participating under the supervision of Councilor Lee Jeonghwan, whose electoral district includes Suwan Hana Middle School.
An opportunity was provided for students to directly experience local council legislative activities such as reviewing and deciding on ordinances and delivering 2-minute free speeches.
The students gave 2-minute free speeches on the topics of ‘Conducting practical evacuation drills at school’ and ‘Revitalizing reading education.’
Following this, the ordinance on ‘Smartphone use within Suwan Hana Middle School’ was proposed, with explanations, Q&A, and debates for and against, followed by electronic voting and resolution.
Student Chairperson Lim Suan said, “By directly participating in the student mock council, I was able to understand how the council plenary session is conducted and gained an understanding of democracy,” adding, “It was a valuable time that allowed me to take a step closer to the political field, which had always seemed difficult.”
The Gwangju Metropolitan Council has been conducting student mock councils since 2005, with schools recommended by the Gwangju Metropolitan Office of Education. So far, a total of 76 sessions have been held with over 8,100 participants, and awards will be given in November for outstanding experience essays.
Last year, the student mock council could not be held due to the severe COVID-19 situation. This year, to provide students with an opportunity to experience the functions and roles of local councils, the flower of representative democracy, the student mock council is being conducted while strictly adhering to quarantine guidelines.
Meanwhile, the council is preparing to conduct the mock council online in case social distancing levels are raised.
