[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Yong-woo] The person who can best keep an eye on the dangers lurking in the workplace, such as injuries and illnesses, is the business owner. What if the business owner opens their 'hawk eyes' and evaluates the risks on site themselves?

This competition was launched on the premise that the greatest 'practical benefit' in protecting workers' lives comes from workplace 'autonomy.' It is the 'Risk Assessment Best Practice Presentation Contest.'

The '2021 Risk Assessment Best Practice Presentation Contest,' a major event of the '2021 Industrial Safety and Health Emphasis Week' hosted by the Korea Occupational Safety and Health Agency, was held without an audience on the 6th at KINTEX in Ilsan, Gyeonggi Province.

The Industrial Safety and Health Emphasis Week is designated by the Ministry of Employment and Labor as the first week of July every year. It organizes events related to safety and health and conducts campaigns every year to raise awareness of the importance of workers' lives in workplaces and society.

This 'contest' is a place to present excellent cases of promoting risk assessment programs. Among the 19 participating workplaces in the competition, six workplaces selected through the preliminary round advanced to the finals to compete.

'Risk assessment' refers to the entire safety and health process in which the business owner identifies hazardous and risky factors in the workplace, estimates the likelihood (frequency) and severity (intensity) of injuries or illnesses caused by those factors, and establishes and implements reduction measures.

As a result of the presentations, Dain Safety Industry won the grand prize, the Minister of Employment and Labor Award. The workplace received good evaluations for various risk discovery activities and operational aspects.

All events during the Emphasis Week, including this presentation contest, were held without an audience to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

The on-site video can be viewed on the agency's YouTube channel, and information related to the event can be found by clicking on the Industrial Safety and Health Emphasis Week website.

Park Doo-yong, Director of the Korea Occupational Safety and Health Agency, said, “I hope the risk assessment system will be quickly established at every site, and that autonomous safety and health activities at workplaces will be promoted, leading to an actual reduction in fatal accidents.”
