[Asia Economy Reporter Kwon Jae-hee] Canadian high-end parka brand 'Canada Goose' has decided to stop producing products using animal fur by the end of next year.
On the 24th (local time), Canada Goose stated in a press release, "We have decided to change our sales policy to reflect consumer preferences avoiding animal-based products."
Canada Goose is a representative Canadian brand producing winter parkas, known as a high-end luxury item priced at 1,000 Canadian dollars (approximately 910,000 KRW) per piece.
Canada Goose has used coyote fur as a raw material for its parkas but explained that it has been struggling due to criticism from animal protection and environmental groups and the industry's new trend toward sustainability.
Previously, Canada Goose announced plans last year to improve the supply chain for fur materials. The decision made by Canada Goose this time is regarded as a more concrete advancement than the earlier announcement.
A market analyst said, "The greatest driving force is always the consumer," adding, "Consumers, armed with more education and knowledge, are increasing pressure on manufacturers to ban fur."
He predicted a 5-10% decrease in sales due to Canada Goose's new decision but stated that greater brand growth will follow due to positive consumer response.
However, it was also pointed out that Canada Goose plans to continue producing down jackets using goose feathers, so it is not yet a complete transition.
