Uzbek International Student Fined for Taking Korean Proxy Exam for Refugee Fellow Koreans

[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Ju Cheol-in] A foreign student who took the Korean language test on behalf of a compatriot recognized as a refugee and residing in Korea was sentenced to a fine.

On the 5th, Judge Jeong Han-geun of the Ulsan District Court Criminal Division 1 announced that he sentenced Mr. A, who was tried on charges including obstruction of official duties by deception, to a fine of 2 million won.

Mr. A, a graduate student of Uzbek nationality, was indicted for taking the Korean Language Proficiency Test administered by the National Institute for International Education in January 2019 on behalf of refugee Mr. B, who is of the same nationality.

Mr. A contacted Mr. B through social networking services (SNS) and impersonated Mr. B by presenting a foreigner registration card and an exam admission ticket previously received from Mr. B to the proctor.

The court stated the reason for the sentence, saying, “Mr. A did not gain any benefit,” and “considering that he is diligently pursuing his studies, such as obtaining a degree.”
