The New York Times (NYT) reported on the 26th (local time) that "Carle's family announced he passed away from kidney failure on the 23rd at his studio in Northampton, Massachusetts."
Born in New York, USA, his works mainly featured various animals, flowers and butterflies, the sun, moon, and stars?elements of nature. His representative work is "The Very Hungry Caterpillar," published in June 1969. Composed of 224 words and illustrations, the book tells the story of a hungry caterpillar eating and growing over a week until it transforms into a butterfly. It has been translated into over 70 languages and sold more than 55 million copies worldwide, becoming a global bestseller.
In addition to this, Carle's works such as "Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?", "Do You Want to Be My Friend?", and "From Head to Toe" conveyed themes of the beauty of nature, the preciousness of life, and living in harmony with nature.
He received the literary award "Regina Medal" in 1999 and the children's literature award "Laura Ingalls Wilder Award" in 2003.
