[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Sang-hyun] Geoje City in Gyeongnam announced on the 25th that it will prepare emergency transportation measures to alleviate the inconvenience to citizens as the city bus union has entered a full strike due to the breakdown of wage and collective bargaining negotiations with management.
First, 72 replacement charter buses will operate on 45 routes to maintain the city bus operation rate at over 65% compared to the existing level.
The replacement buses will run free of charge from 6:20 a.m. to 9 p.m. (varies by route), and a responsible public official will board the bus until the replacement drivers become familiar with the routes to assist passengers with boarding and alighting.
During commuting hours, the city plans to minimize citizen inconvenience by concentrating operations and requesting expanded shuttle bus services for the two major shipyards and schools at all levels.
In addition, the vehicle restriction on 626 taxis will be temporarily lifted to fill the gap caused by the bus service suspension.
Emergency transportation measures will be announced through the city hall website, media, and village broadcasts, and citizens are encouraged to secure alternative means of transportation such as carpooling and using bicycles.
Mayor Byeon Gwang-yong stated, “We will do our best to mediate negotiations between labor and management to normalize city bus operations as soon as possible.”
