[Asia Economy Reporter Dongwoo Lee] CJ Logistics announced on the 16th that, in celebration of the upcoming 'Couple's Day' (May 21), a survey of family relationships among its approximately 20,000 delivery drivers revealed that 2,692 delivery drivers (1,346 couples) are husband and wife working together.
Among the 20,000 delivery drivers, 4,002 were found to be working with family members including spouses, parents, children, siblings, and relatives.
As the delivery industry has developed, the number of married delivery drivers has steadily increased each year. The figures rose from 1,800 in 2018 to 2,310 in 2019, and 2,450 in 2020, continuing the upward trend with a 9.9% increase compared to last year. The number of family-unit delivery drivers also grew by 14.4% from 3,498 last year.
The main reason for the increase in couples or family delivery drivers is the perception that being a delivery driver is a "decent job." In particular, as income has significantly increased due to the rise in delivery volume, it was found that drivers prefer working with their spouse or family rather than hiring outsiders. Initially, family members would assist two to three times a week on days with high volume, but as the number of customers and volume in their assigned areas increased, they naturally divided the area and achieved high income.
Additionally, in the case of CJ Logistics, unlike in the past, the delivery sites have become more advanced, which seems to have eased the work intensity. Advanced facilities such as automatic sorting machines like the Wheel Sorter and the small parcel dedicated sorter MP (Multi Point) have been installed at delivery sites, and more than 4,000 sorting support personnel have been deployed, significantly reducing working hours and intensity.
A CJ Logistics official stated, "As delivery drivers have emerged as a promising profession with stable income and a guaranteed future, the number of family delivery drivers continues to increase," adding, "We will strive to create an environment where delivery drivers can work with pride alongside their families."
