[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yoon Jamin] Jinsungyoung, a master calligrapher of the Republic of Korea, is attracting attention by transforming marine debris into artworks.

Artist Jin, who is based on Jodo (Saeseom) Island in Jindo-gun, happened to stroll along a nearby beach and, seeing driftwood, buoys, fishing gear, and floating debris carried by the wind and waves, decided to find a recycling method that reflects environmental protection and the characteristics of the island.

Recognizing that the indiscriminate dumping of trash polluting the sea is not only a problem in cities but also frequently occurs in island areas, he rolled up his sleeves to address the issue.

In particular, considering that work using driftwood should be done through wood carving to harmonize with the calligraphy, he consulted with Yang Woo-kyung, a wood carving artist active in Gwangju.

Artist Jin said, “I proceed with engraving letters while preserving the original appearance of the discarded items as much as possible,” adding, “By turning abandoned and neglected objects into artworks, I can delight people’s eyes through environmental protection and calligraphy.”

Residents are also supporting Jin’s activities.

Yoon Chung-jin (69, Jodo-myeon, Jindo-gun) said, “I welcome the theme of recycling unusable items and give a big round of applause to artist Jin’s passion.”

Han Young-soo (58, Jodo-myeon, Jindo-gun) stated, “It was really nice to see someone putting their heart into action, and above all, it’s amazing that he considered the environment while creating his artworks.”

Meanwhile, since February, artist Jin has been conducting the campaign ‘Writing Names of Hope for the End of COVID-19!’ which has received great responses from many people.
