[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Heeyoon] In May, the month of family with many anniversaries, the number one "most desired gift" was found to be a massage chair.

In a survey conducted by Korea Research on 1,000 men and women aged 20 and over nationwide about "gifts desired during Family Month and holidays," half, 50.4%, chose a massage chair. Among those who selected massage chairs, the age groups corresponding to the parents' generation were 50s (56.6%), 40s (53.7%), and 60 and over (52.7%) in that order.

Following massage chairs, home appliances such as TVs and refrigerators ranked second with 46.9%. Other preferences included domestic and international family trips (43.8%), accessories such as bags, clothing, and watches (37.9%), cash (2.4%), and computers (0.5%).

The preference for massage chairs ranking first is interpreted as a result of increased time spent at home due to continued social distancing during the COVID-19 pandemic and growing interest in health management.

When asked about the preferred occasion to gift a massage chair, respondents most frequently chose Parents' Day (59.6%). Holidays (50.3%), birthdays of family or acquaintances (48.5%), wedding gifts or dowries (17.1%), wedding anniversaries (16.6%), Couples' Day (8.5%), and Christmas (6.5%) followed.

A representative from Bodyfriend said, "While home appliances or health functional foods were typical popular gift items during Family Month, now massage chairs are replacing that position," adding, "Massage chairs not only help with health management but also offer the dual value of gifting a home interior item."
