원본보기 아이콘[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Mapo-gu (Mayor Yoo Dong-gyun) is promoting the construction of the ‘Hallyu Performance and Tourism Complex (tentative name),’ a facility specialized in popular culture performances, to revitalize the performance tourism industry centered on Hallyu.
This initiative aims to secure tourism demand in the post-COVID-19 era and expand the insufficient performance infrastructure in the northwestern area of Seoul.
Starting from the 2015 basic research on establishing a ‘Hallyu Tourism Multiplex Town’ by the Korea Tourism Organization, this project has undergone a long preparation period, including preliminary feasibility studies by the Ministry of Economy and Finance and central investment reviews by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety. The district officially launched the project by holding a design service commencement briefing on the 18th.
The main content of this project is to build a popular culture performance facility with five above-ground floors and a total floor area of 11,778㎡ (subject to change) on approximately 6,500㎡ of land at ‘9, Mapodaero 1-gil, Mapo-gu,’ currently used as a reservoir facility and public parking lot. The total project cost is expected to be 91.4 billion KRW.
The facility will include a large concert hall capable of accommodating over 2,500 people, a small theater for non-verbal performances and musicals, a multipurpose performance hall suitable for fan sign events, broadcasting filming, and small-scale performances, and an outdoor performance space on the rooftop offering views of the Han River, enabling a variety of performances across different fields.
The ‘Hallyu Performance and Tourism Complex’ is expected to provide local residents and tourists with opportunities to experience Hallyu performances such as K-POP, as well as diverse attractions like Han River views, offering a unique experience.
The district plans to complete the design by the first half of 2022, start construction in the second half, and aims for completion by December 2024. Experts from various fields will be appointed as advisory committee members to actively reflect their opinions.
Yoo Dong-gyun, Mayor of Mapo-gu, stated, “The Hallyu Performance and Tourism Complex is expected to become a tourism hub linking Hongdae, Sinchon, and the Han River in Mapo.” He added, “We will steadily prepare to provide overseas tourists with diverse Hallyu performance cultural experiences and establish Mapo-gu as a cultural center city recognized worldwide.”
