[Asia Economy Reporter Kangwook Cho] Korea Land and Housing Corporation (LH) announced on the 25th that it will actively support the housing upgrade of vulnerable groups living in non-residential housing by opening additional ‘Relocation Support 119 Centers.’ Non-residential households refer to those living in non-residential dwellings such as jjokbang (small rooms), gosiwon (tiny dormitory rooms), and vinyl houses.
The ‘Relocation Support 119 Center’ was established following the government’s announcement of the ‘Strengthening Housing Support Measures for Non-Residential Households’ in October 2019. It supports the overall relocation and settlement of non-residential households to public rental housing, and is responsible for linking community welfare resources and providing daily necessities.
Specifically, the Relocation Support 119 Center carries out relocation and settlement support tasks. ‘Relocation support’ provides services such as rental housing assistance and application form preparation for non-residential households. It also supports deposits, moving expenses, and daily necessities through the Housing Welfare Foundation. ‘Settlement support’ includes job placement linked with self-support centers after moving in, and health management in cooperation with specialized health institutions.
Since January last year, LH has established 10 permanent Relocation Support 119 Centers at LH regional headquarters and housing welfare offices located in metropolitan areas including Seoul, Gyeonggi, Incheon, as well as Daejeon, Daegu, and Busan, providing close support to non-residential households.
This year, to further expand housing upgrade support for non-residential households, LH will operate an additional 50 centers nationwide in addition to the existing 10 permanent centers. Social workers and housing welfare specialists will be assigned to each center to enhance professional expertise.
Last year, LH supported public rental housing for 5,502 out of 6,662 non-residential households identified by the government and local governments. This year, LH aims to upgrade the housing of 6,000 non-residential households and plans to continuously supply a total of 40,000 units by 2025.
Seochangwon, Head of LH Housing Welfare Headquarters, said, “We will establish an information delivery system for non-residential residents who are vulnerable to acquiring housing welfare information, provide them with one-stop housing services, and guarantee their housing conditions.” He added, “LH will continue to do its best to support housing upgrades for vulnerable housing groups.”
