According to the Gwangju Regional Veterans Office on the 1st, the Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs announced the selection of Kim Wonyong (1896?1976), Jeon Gyeongmu (1898?1947), Shim Youngshin (1882?1975), and Min Hamna (1888?1952) as the independence activists of April.
Kim Wonyong began organizing support groups for the independence movement in the United States in April 1923 and was active as a member of the Korean American Federation Committee and others in 1941. He returned to Korea in October 1945 and served as a member of the Provisional Legislative Assembly.
Jeon Gyeongmu also worked in the United States as a special correspondent for the Korean American Federation Committee in Chongqing in 1942, promoting support for the Provisional Government, diplomacy, and propaganda activities.
Shim Youngshin and Min Hamna were active in the Korean Women's Relief Society, a women's independence movement organization formed in Hawaii, USA, supporting funds for the independence movement.
To honor their meritorious services, the government posthumously awarded the Patriotic Medal to Kim Wonyong and Jeon Gyeongmu in 1995, to Shim Youngshin in 1997, and the National Foundation Medal to Min Hamna in 2019.
Meanwhile, the Independence Activist of the Month is a list of Korean independence activists selected and announced by the Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs. Since 1992, the Ministry has designated and announced more than 12 independence activists annually by month and has held commemorative events such as memorial ceremonies and exhibitions to honor their contributions.
