[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Gwanak-gu (Mayor Park Jun-hee) has transformed Byeolbitnaerimcheon into a nighttime scenic spot through the installation of distinctive landscape lighting inspired by starlight.
The district invested 800 million KRW in special grants to complete the landscape lighting installation work, which began in November last year, targeting six bridges with high pedestrian traffic within Byeolbitnaerimcheon.
The bridges equipped with lighting are Dorim Pedestrian Bridge, Sillim 4·5-dong Bridge, Munhwa Bridge, Chungmu Bridge, Yangsan Bridge, and Sillim 3 Bridge. Various concept landscape lights were installed, including 561 LED line bars, 68 LED floodlights, and 17 designer light poles on the bridge sides, railings, and stairs.
The district emphasized creating a safe and pleasant walking path for residents by breathing life into the cold and barren urban structures with light, thereby producing a vibrant nighttime waterfront landscape.
In particular, considering the characteristics of each bridge site, various viewing rights for tourists and residents were analyzed, and a pleasant and harmonious nighttime environment was created while preserving natural resources and existing facilities to the greatest extent possible.
Through this project, conducted as part of the ‘Byeolbitnaerimcheon Specialization Project,’ the district improved the urban landscape and created a natural resting place for residents to see and enjoy, completing Byeolbitnaerimcheon as a representative river ecological axis in the southwest area. It is expected to contribute to revitalizing the local economy by turning Gwanak-gu into a tourist attraction.
Along with this, last year, reflecting various residents’ opinions, the district named the entire Dorimcheon section within Gwanak-gu with the brand name ‘Byeolbitnaerimcheon,’ which expresses the image of a star falling, inspired by the birth legend of Gwanak-gu’s urban brand ‘General Gang Gam-chan,’ strengthening the urban brand.
Mayor Park Jun-hee said, “In the evening, when the day winds down, I hope people can soothe their weary hearts from COVID-19 by feeling the cool breeze at Byeolbitnaerimcheon and enjoying the beautiful nature combined with the landscape lighting.” He added, “We will continue to accelerate the Byeolbitnaerimcheon Specialization Project to make the reborn Byeolbitnaerimcheon and the green Gwanaksan Mountain harmonize into an eco-friendly city and strive to make it a representative landmark of Seoul.”
