"Creating the World's Best 5G+ Convergence Ecosystem" Ministry of Science and ICT Launches '5G+ Industrial Ecosystem Policy Council'

[Asia Economy Reporter Eunmo Koo] The Ministry of Science and ICT announced on the 24th that it held the inaugural meeting of the ‘5G+ Industrial Ecosystem Policy Council’ to establish a world-class 5G+ convergence ecosystem based on the commercialization of 5G.

The 5G+ Industrial Ecosystem Policy Council was formed to lead the global 5G+ industrial ecosystem in accordance with the ‘2021 5G+ Promotion Plan,’ which declared this year as the inaugural year for creating the 5G+ convergence ecosystem. In addition to the industrial ecosystem policy council launched on this day to strengthen public-private cooperation related to 5G+, a total of seven councils will operate, including five core 5G services?smart factories, immersive content, digital healthcare, autonomous vehicles, smart cities?and the 5G network.

The 5G+ Industrial Ecosystem Policy Council will include not only supply-side companies but also demand-side companies to accelerate the early establishment of the 5G+ industrial ecosystem. It plans to address issues related to the 5G+ ecosystem together with academia, research institutes, specialized organizations, the dedicated 5G+ agency (Institute for Information & Communications Technology Planning & Evaluation), and relevant government ministries. Furthermore, it will devise mid- to long-term policy measures to strengthen the competitiveness of 5G+ ecosystem components such as equipment, devices, and software, and to form a comprehensive ecosystem.

At the inaugural meeting, discussions were held on the composition, operation plans, and objectives of the policy council, and short-term as well as mid- to long-term tasks for focused review by the 5G+ Industrial Ecosystem Policy Council were selected.

Seungwon Lee, Director of the Information and Communications Industry Policy Bureau at the Ministry of Science and ICT, stated, “The 5G+ Industrial Ecosystem Policy Council is a meaningful attempt for government ministries, specialized organizations, and the private sector to collaborate without boundaries. Taking this opportunity, various stakeholders and experts will communicate together to form a world-class 5G convergence ecosystem at an early stage.”
