[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] The Seoul Metropolitan Government announced on the 22nd that it will recruit 175 Seoul citizens who wish to become 'Citizen Gardeners.' After completing the advanced course, participants will be granted the qualification of Seoul Citizen Gardener and can participate in volunteer activities.
The Citizen Gardener training program, consisting of a 'Basic Course' and an 'Advanced Course,' will recruit on a first-come, first-served basis through the Seoul public service reservation system, with a tuition fee of 250,000 KRW per course. To minimize the risk to citizens due to COVID-19, each course will combine online lectures and on-site practice.
Seoul operates the Citizen Gardener training program to spread garden culture in daily life and cultivate citizens' awareness of greening, having produced a total of 537 citizen gardeners by 2020. Citizen Gardeners participate in Seoul city projects such as creating pop-up gardens or join citizen gardener groups to plant and manage flowers and trees in parks, schools, and other locations.
In April, 200 students will be recruited on a first-come, first-served basis for the first half of the year for the 'Citizen Landscape Academy,' a basic liberal arts course related to landscaping and gardening. Choi Yoon-jong, Director of the Seoul Metropolitan Government's Green City Bureau, said, "Through the Citizen Gardener training program, I hope citizens will become closer to plants and gardens in their daily lives and enjoy the joy of learning," adding, "I hope that the trained Seoul Citizen Gardeners will have a positive impact by spreading and revitalizing garden culture."
