[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Muk 2-dong, where the Jangmi Tunnel and waterfront space along the Jungnangcheon embankment are located, is transforming into the "Jangmi Village where flowers bloom all year round" through urban regeneration.

Jungnang-gu (Mayor Ryu Kyung-gi) announced that it will promote the "2021 Muk 2-dong Urban Regeneration Resident Contest Project" until the 24th to increase local residents' interest and participation in urban regeneration projects and to enhance residents' capabilities.

Muk 2-dong, selected as an urban regeneration revitalization area in 2017, secured 25 billion KRW in seed money after being selected as a New Deal project by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport in 2018.

Based on the secured budget, the district plans to create a youth culture development center, Jangmi Village Family Library, and improve alleyway landscapes by 2022. The creation of Jangmi Street will also strengthen the revitalization of the local commercial district.

The contest categories are general and specialized contests, recruiting about six teams per category.

The general contest supports projects related to activating resident communities, providing up to 5 million KRW to Muk 2-dong residents, resident councils, and organizations located in Muk 2-dong.

The specialized contest (theme-designated contest) invites applications under four themes: village enterprise (product) projects, pilot operation projects for resident shared facilities, alley greening projects, and youth community activation projects.

Up to 9.5 million KRW will be supported for residents and organizations located in the district.

Residents and organizations wishing to participate can apply by visiting the Muk 2-dong Urban Regeneration Support Center or by email (romantic_muk2@naver.com).

Selected residents and organizations will carry out their projects from May to October.

Ryu Kyung-gi, Mayor of Jungnang-gu, said, "The success of urban regeneration depends on the interest and participation of residents, who are the main actors," adding, "We will establish a foundation for sustainable urban regeneration by strengthening the capacity to promote resident-led urban regeneration projects."

The district is actively conducting urban regeneration projects in 11 locations including Junghwa 2-dong, Mangwoo Bon-dong, and Myeonmok 2-dong.

This accounts for 20% of the total residential area (10.82㎢) of Jungnang-gu, with a total project cost reaching 92.8 billion KRW.

Last year, it established a solid foundation for supporting urban regeneration by enacting the first urban regeneration fund ordinance among Seoul's autonomous districts and launching an urban regeneration portal.
