원본보기 아이콘[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Bong-ju] A slogan that belittles women and seems to shift accident responsibility onto workers has sparked criticism at a construction site in Busan.
On the 8th, according to Busanjin-gu, a sign at the construction site of the Busan International Art Center at the north gate of Busan Citizens Park reads, "If an accident happens, another man will be lying next to your wife and spending your compensation money."
Next to the text, there is an illustration of a woman covered with a blanket and a bundle of 50,000 won bills.
The construction company, Taeyoung Construction Consortium, reportedly installed the signboard that morning.
Citizens who discovered this protested to Busanjin-gu and Busan City, demanding the removal of the signboard. The signboard was immediately taken down that day.
Such phrases have previously caused controversy when used at construction sites.
In 2019, a similar phrase appeared on a signboard at an apartment construction site, as well as in 2016 at an apartment construction site in Daegu, causing public outcry.
The Construction Workers' Union at the time stated, "No one works because they want to die. The content of the signboard shifts accident responsibility onto workers," and pointed out, "Such phrases arise from the employer's perception that if an accident occurs, it is the worker's fault for not following safety rules."
