[Asia Economy Reporter Han-ah Na] A man in his 40s who stabbed his wife more than 10 times with a weapon in front of their elementary school-aged daughter, suspecting her of infidelity, was brought to trial and sentenced to a heavy punishment. It was reported that the elementary school daughter sent a letter to the court asking for leniency for her father before the sentencing hearing.

On the 18th, the Incheon District Court announced that it sentenced A (43) to 12 years in prison on charges of murder.

A was arrested and indicted on charges of killing his wife B (40) by hitting her face with his fist and stabbing her 17 times in the neck and back with a weapon at their home around 12:24 a.m. on September 7 last year after an argument.

According to the autopsy, B suffered a fractured lower jaw and was killed while unconscious and collapsed, and A also attempted self-harm after the crime.

At the time of the crime, A was investigated to have committed the act in a moment of rage after suspecting B of infidelity during an argument.

Since 2015, A and his wife B had frequent conflicts due to B’s frequent outings, drinking, and late returns home, and since September 2019, after learning that B secretly traveled with people she met through online games, A had suspected her of infidelity.

A’s daughter, who was present at the scene and shocked by the incident, is currently being cared for by her grandmother, and she also submitted a letter to the court asking for leniency for her father.

The court said, “The defendant committed the crime after suspecting and arguing with the victim,” and judged, “Considering the circumstances of the crime, the nature of the crime is very bad and the method was cruel.”

It added, “The daughter, who was in the lower grades of elementary school at the time, directly witnessed her mother being killed and must have suffered mental trauma that will be difficult to overcome for life,” and “It is appropriate to isolate the defendant, who ended the marital conflict in front of the child with murder, from society for a long time so that he lives with a repentant heart.”

However, the court explained the sentencing reasons, saying, “The defendant reported the crime through his daughter immediately after the crime and surrendered himself, confessed to all the crimes, and showed remorse,” and “Consideration was given to the fact that the defendant had tried to prevent the conflict from escalating to a catastrophe by attending couples counseling with the victim in the past.”
