[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Gwan-woo] Dongshin University’s school enterprise, the Korea Color Science Research Institute, announced on the 19th that it signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Hebei Weixian Representative Office in Korea at the university’s Industry-Academic Cooperation Center to jointly develop blue light blocking contact lenses.

The Korea Color Science Research Institute will provide its global patented blue light blocking technology, while the Hebei Weixian Representative Office in Korea agreed to invest the necessary funds for establishing research laboratories and factories in China.

Both organizations plan to cooperate to establish a contact lens research institute in Hebei Weixian, China within this year and to build a production factory in 2022.

Blue light, which is widely emitted from smart devices and LED lighting equipment, can cause eye fatigue and dry eye syndrome when exposed for long periods, potentially harming the retina and lens.

Dongshin University’s Korea Color Science Research Institute, together with JCK Medical Co., Ltd., succeeded in mass-producing the world’s first blue light blocking colored contact lenses.

The blue light blocking rate of these colored contact lenses is over 25%, providing an effect equivalent to that of currently available blue light blocking eyeglass lenses.

Yoo Geun-chang, CEO of the Korea Color Science Research Institute, stated, “We will collaborate to develop contact lenses and secure distribution markets targeting the Chinese-speaking market, where demand for colored lenses is rapidly increasing.”
