The Gwangju City Hall of Fame was established to honor social contributors and share social contribution activities with citizens to revitalize the culture of social contribution in the Gwangju region.
The Hall of Fame is divided into three zones. First, there is a space dedicated to the recipients of the ‘Citizen Award,’ which has been awarded annually since 1987 in five fields (▲Social Service ▲Academics ▲Arts ▲Sports ▲Regional Economic Promotion) to citizens and organizations who have contributed to regional development.
Currently, this zone enshrines 153 past Citizen Award recipients, with space left vacant for future awardees.
There is also a space for members of the ‘Honor Society,’ who contribute to the local community through meaningful sharing. This space enshrines the names of 114 Gwangju Honor Society members.
Gwangju City plans to fill the remaining space by discovering ordinary citizens who practice sharing and solidarity for the local community, creating warm resonance and spreading positive influence.
Mayor Lee Yong-seop said, “People who pushed away the darkness of the era and brought new light, such as the Gwangju Student Anti-Japanese Movement and the May 18 Democratic Movement, were always ordinary neighbors around us,” and added, “We ask for citizens’ interest and support so that the Hall of Fame can develop into a space that records and remembers the meaningful footprints of good and warm-hearted ordinary citizens.”
