[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Seon-gang] Gwangju Metropolitan City announced on the 12th that it will conduct intensive disinfection of public transportation such as city buses and urban rail to prevent and curb the spread of COVID-19.
The city plans to conduct COVID-19 mass testing for 2,746 city bus drivers by the 15th to alleviate the concerns of citizens using public transportation.
City buses will be disinfected by deploying 30 professional disinfection workers until the 10th of next month. This disinfection is proactively implemented by mobilizing private disinfection companies during the period when the public transportation facility disinfection team, which was promoted as an existing public job project, ended in December last year and will resume next month after participant selection procedures, resulting in a gap of more than one month.
Disinfection personnel will be stationed at public garages and turnaround points to disinfect city bus vehicles and garages that have completed operation at least once daily, and will continue to promote mandatory mask-wearing using LED destination signs, bus route signs, vehicle stickers, and more.
Additionally, emergency masks are stocked on all city buses to be used in case of urgent situations where passengers' masks are damaged or contaminated.
Meanwhile, urban rail has strengthened disinfection activities by switching to self-disinfection by staff working at stations after the public transportation facility disinfection team public job project ended in December last year.
Electric trains are disinfected twice a week, stations once daily, and frequently touched areas such as elevator buttons and ticket gates are sterilized regularly. Going forward, intensive disinfection will be further strengthened through outsourcing to professional disinfection companies.
Park Nam-eon, Director of the City Transportation and Construction Bureau, said, “We will do our best to ensure that citizens can use public transportation safely without worrying about COVID-19 infection,” and added, “We hope citizens will also strictly follow personal quarantine rules such as wearing masks and refraining from eating while using public transportation.”
