[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Juhyung] Supporters of U.S. President Donald Trump stormed the U.S. Capitol building. As a result, the confirmation process of President-elect Joe Biden's victory has been halted, causing chaos.

According to U.S. media CNN and others, on the 6th (local time), Trump supporters broke into the Capitol building, aiming to prevent the joint session of the House and Senate to confirm Biden's victory.

They held protests throughout Washington D.C., the U.S. capital where the Congress is located, and some supporters crossed barricades to enter the Capitol building. According to CNN, the protesters broke doors inside the Capitol and shouted slogans such as "The election was stolen."

Due to this, U.S. Vice President Mike Pence, who was presiding over the joint session of the House and Senate, left his seat under protection, and some lawmakers remaining in the chamber hid under their chairs.

It was reported that gunshots were heard inside the Capitol during the protest. CNN reported that a woman was critically injured by gunfire and later announced that she died around 6 p.m. that day.

As the situation worsened, the National Guard and federal law enforcement officers were deployed to disperse the protesters. U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi requested additional National Guard deployment, and the Washington D.C. National Guard along with the nearby Virginia National Guard were dispatched to suppress the protest.

At the same time, the protesters were pushed out of the Capitol by the National Guard and police, but some Trump supporters continued protesting in front of the Capitol and throughout Washington D.C.

Meanwhile, the U.S. Congress plans to resume the confirmation process of Biden's victory once the situation is under control. According to CNN, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer stated that the meeting to confirm Biden's victory will be reconvened at 8 p.m. that day.
