Mapo-gu, Gyeongui Line Forest Park, and Other Locations Offer Free Public WiFi Service

[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Free public WiFi service accessible to everyone is being provided throughout the Mapo-gu sections of Gyeongui Line Forest Park, Hongjecheon, and Bulgwangcheon, receiving favorable reviews from citizens.

Mapo-gu (Mayor Yudonggyun) has been installing and providing public WiFi service over a total length of 8.1 km within the district since December last year to expand residents' basic communication rights and digital welfare services.

Last year, Mapo-gu started a self-communication network construction project for public WiFi service in the Mapo-gu sections of Hongjecheon (1.5 km) and Bulgwangcheon (2.1 km) as part of the Seoul Citizen Participatory Budget project.

Subsequently, at the end of October, after consultations with Seoul City to provide benefits to more residents, the entire section of Mapo-gu's Gyeongui Line Forest Park (4.5 km) was included in the service area, and efforts were made to expand the service area.

Accordingly, public WiFi service is currently provided throughout the entire sections of Mapo-gu's Gyeongui Line Forest Park (Yeonnam-dong to Saechanggo), Hongjecheon, and Bulgwangcheon.

Citizen Lee Jeong-yeon (31), who frequently passes through Yeontral Park near Exit 3 of Hongdaeipgu Station, said, “I am very satisfied because I can continuously use WiFi freely while walking along the park path.”

This year, Mapo-gu plans to additionally install public WiFi mainly in places frequently used by residents such as major roads, bus stops, and parks within the district through the Seoul City Smart Network (S-Net) project.

Yudonggyun, Mayor of Mapo-gu, said, “As non-face-to-face online activities increase in the With-Corona era, the demand for communication networks is expected to surge. In preparation for this, we will put more effort into expanding various digital welfare services to guarantee residents' basic communication rights.”
