[Asia Economy Reporter Park Hyesook] Namdong-gu and Yeonsu-gu in Incheon will be designated as 'Women-Friendly Cities' for five years starting next year.
With this, the number of districts in Incheon designated as Women-Friendly Cities has increased to four, following Bupyeong-gu, designated since 2011, and Michuhol-gu, newly designated in 2016.
The Ministry of Gender Equality and Family has been designating and operating Women-Friendly Cities nationwide since 2009, targeting local governments that promote gender-equal regional policies created together by both genders and gender equality policies that can be felt in daily life. The designation period is five years, with phased re-designation reviews every five years.
Namdong-gu and Yeonsu-gu passed the Women-Friendly City designation review by ensuring equal participation of women and men in regional policy and development processes and focusing on women's jobs, care, and safety policies.
Namdong-gu is designated for the first time this time, while Yeonsu-gu is re-designated following its initial designation in 2013.
Once designated as Women-Friendly Cities, they will enhance female representation within administration and various committees, operate citizen participation groups, and establish a foundation for a gender-equal society. Through this, they will promote various specialized projects such as expanding women's economic and social participation, creating safe neighborhoods, and fostering family-friendly environments.
Incheon City has been providing administrative and financial support for specialized projects by district to create an Incheon-type Women-Friendly City, a pledge of the 7th local government. Last year, a metropolitan Women-Friendly City council was formed to provide professional consulting related to Women-Friendly City creation to districts.
Additionally, through resident participatory budgeting, Women-Friendly City specialized projects were solicited, including ▲ creating a women’s safety walking path on the Mansuk-dong overpass in Dong-gu ▲ establishing a women’s empathy community space in Yeonsu-gu ▲ implementing the "Walk Together on Insunam-ro" safe return home project and supporting infant safety seats in Namdong-gu.
An Incheon City official stated, "Next year, we plan to discover more Women-Friendly City specialized projects to support districts and provide customized professional consulting for new and re-designation of Women-Friendly Cities."
