[Asia Economy Yang Nak-gyu, Military Specialist Reporter] The second next-generation frigate (2800t class), 'Gyeongnamham,' has been delivered to the Navy.
According to the Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA) on the 31st, it was built as part of the 'Ulsan-class Batch-II' project to replace the aging frigates and patrol ships currently operated by the Navy.
Construction began in October 2016 at Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering, and despite the COVID-19 pandemic, it was delivered in compliance with government quarantine guidelines.
Unlike the existing frigates' mechanical propulsion system (diesel engine + gas turbine), it applies an advanced hybrid propulsion system (propulsion motor + gas turbine) that produces less noise. It is equipped with a towed array sonar system (TASS) and long-range anti-submarine torpedoes, which were previously only installed on destroyers, significantly enhancing its anti-submarine warfare capabilities.
The hull incorporates stealth design to reduce radar detection by enemies. DAPA stated that following Gyeongnamham, the 3rd to 8th next-generation frigates will be constructed without delay and all will be delivered to the Navy by 2023.
DAPA explained, "Compared to existing frigates and patrol ships, this warship greatly improves surface and submarine target detection and attack capabilities, as well as air defense capabilities," adding, "Detection equipment such as detection and tracking radars, anti-ship and land-attack guided missiles, and naval gun armament systems are networked to automate command and control, and the combat system was developed domestically."
