[Asia Economy (Daejeon) Reporter Jeong Il-woong] The Korean Intellectual Property Office (KIPO) announced on the 30th that it has newly designated 132 private patent investigation and analysis institutions as Industrial Property Diagnostic Institutions.

Industrial Property Diagnostic Institutions perform tasks such as providing research and development strategies and excellent patent creation strategies through patent investigation and analysis.

KIPO has been operating the Industrial Property Diagnostic Institution system since 2001. In particular, last month, it established the "Regulations on the Designation and Operation of Industrial Property Diagnostic Institutions" as a KIPO notification, laying the foundation to enhance the efficiency of research and development in industry-academia-research sectors and support the creation of excellent patents.

The newly designated Industrial Property Diagnostic Institutions will conduct trend surveys and analyses on patents and other industrial property rights for industry, academia, and research sectors, providing research and development strategies and excellent patent creation strategies.

Through this, companies, universities, and public research institutes will be able to utilize Industrial Property Diagnostic Institutions whenever patent investigation and analysis are needed during the research and development process.

Above all, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) will be able to reduce their financial burden as, starting from January next year, they can receive tax credits for expenses incurred for patent investigation and analysis paid to Industrial Property Diagnostic Institutions to enhance research and development efficiency and competitiveness.

Park Ho-hyung, Director of the Industrial Property Policy Bureau at KIPO, stated, “KIPO will continue to designate capable private patent investigation and analysis institutions as Industrial Property Diagnostic Institutions to improve the efficiency of research and development in industry, academia, and research sectors and promote the development of the intellectual property service industry.”
