[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Jong-hwa] KCC received a commendation from the Mayor of Hanam at the '2020 Awards Ceremony for Meritorious Contributors in the Field of Architecture' held at Hanam City Hall on the 1st. This recognition was given for their contribution to improving the living environment of energy-vulnerable groups and creating green buildings through the public-private partnership project 'Cool Roof Hanam' conducted with Hanam City throughout the year.
In January, KCC signed a business agreement with Hanam City and Hyundai Construction to participate in Cool Roof Hanam and continued their social contribution activities. Cool Roof Hanam is a pilot project promoted by Hanam City this year, which involves applying heat-reflective paint to the roofs of old buildings mainly used by energy-disadvantaged groups. Applying heat-reflective paint to roofs can reduce indoor building temperatures by about 4 to 5℃ during summer, thereby saving energy required for cooling.
This project was carried out with Hanam City discovering and selecting target buildings and handling administrative support such as obtaining consent from owners (tenants), KCC providing heat-reflective paint products and technical support, and Hyundai Construction performing painting and related work. As a result, heat-reflective paint was applied to three senior centers located in Sangsan-gokdong, Choi-dong, and Pungsan-dong in Hanam City. Hanam City plans to expand the Cool Roof Hanam project targets next year, so it is expected that more citizens will benefit in the future.
The heat-reflective paint supported by KCC is the 'Spotan Sangdo (Energy)' product, which can lower indoor temperatures by up to 5℃ compared to regular paint. The paint reflects solar infrared rays significantly, reducing the heat accumulation directly absorbed by the roof. Compared to similar rooftop greening projects, it offers faster application speed, lower cost, and the advantage of being applicable to any building.
A KCC official stated, "We feel a great sense of accomplishment by conducting the Cool Roof campaign through this public-private collaboration, helping facilities vulnerable to heatwaves," adding, "Since Cool Roof has various effects such as improving the living environment of vulnerable groups and reducing summer electricity demand, we plan to further expand the Cool Roof campaign targeting community facilities and facilities for marginalized groups."
Meanwhile, Cool Roof not only reduces indoor temperatures but also has significant social benefits. Applying this method to multiple buildings in urban areas helps mitigate the urban heat island effect and positively impacts environmental conservation, such as reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Since 2010, Cool Roof campaigns have been conducted in places like New York, USA, and recently, various local governments across South Korea have been expanding Cool Roof campaigns nationwide.
