[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Heung-soon] The Personal Information Protection Commission announced on the 23rd that it will extend the payment deadlines or defer the collection of fines and penalties within a maximum period of one year to alleviate the economic burden on companies due to the prolonged COVID-19 pandemic.
The support targets are companies that must pay fines or penalties for violating personal information protection regulations during the 'serious' stage of COVID-19 quarantine. The COVID-19 quarantine stage was elevated to the serious stage on February 24 of this year and has been maintained since then.
The payment deadline is uniformly deferred by 9 months, and if an extension application is submitted to the Personal Information Protection Commission with proof of COVID-19 related damages, an additional 3 months of deferral is granted.
Yoon Jong-in, Chairman of the Personal Information Protection Commission, said, "We will explore various measures to alleviate the burdens of companies struggling due to the prolonged COVID-19 pandemic and provide practical support."
