[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Dong-wook] The 'Bonghwa National Sports Center' (Haegari, Bonghwa-eup), which will serve as the center of living sports in the northern region of Gyeongsangbuk-do, will begin official operations from December 1 following its opening ceremony.
The opening ceremony was held on the afternoon of the 23rd with about 400 attendees, including Governor Lee Cheol-woo, Bonghwa County Mayor Eom Tae-hang, Bonghwa County Council Chairman Kwon Young-jun, and provincial council members.
The construction of the Bonghwa National Sports Center, selected in 2016 as a project by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, involved a total investment of 16.2 billion KRW, including 3.3 billion KRW in national funds and 12.9 billion KRW in local funds. Since groundbreaking in 2018, the center, with a total floor area of 4,934㎡, one basement floor, and two above-ground floors, was completed last May.
The Bonghwa National Sports Center is equipped with facilities including 12 bowling lanes, a swimming pool with 6 lanes, an indoor gymnasium, a fitness center, and a table tennis hall. Built as part of the northern region's sports facility expansion project, the center is expected to serve as a living sports community accessible to all age groups from youth to the elderly.
Governor Lee Cheol-woo stated, "It will greatly contribute to the health improvement of over 32,000 Bonghwa residents," and added, "Gyeongbuk Province secured the second-largest budget nationwide, following Gyeonggi Province, with 7 out of 57 national sports centers selected across the country."
Meanwhile, the Bonghwa National Sports Center has been operating on a trial basis with a two-week advance reservation system from the 16th to the 27th for three sports: bowling, fitness, and table tennis. After the trial operation, improvements and supplements will be made to the sports facilities and operating systems before full-scale operation begins on the 1st of next month.
