[Asia Economy Reporter Moon Hyewon] Based on the number of National Pension subscribers, Coupang ranked third in employment size, following Samsung Electronics and Hyundai Motor Company.
According to the number of National Pension subscribers analyzed by CEO Score on the 17th, Coupang and Coupang Fulfillment Service, which operates logistics centers, employed 43,171 people as of the end of the third quarter this year.
Coupang, which ranked fourth in employment size in the second quarter, surpassed LG Electronics in the third quarter to take third place in employment size.
From February to September this year, Coupang created 13,744 new jobs according to the number of National Pension subscribers. This figure is more than twice the combined total of Hanwha Solutions (3,025), ranked second, and Samsung Electronics (2,895), ranked third, during the same period. It also exceeds the total net employment of the remaining top 10 companies, which is 11,398, by over 2,000 people.
Coupang explained that the significant increase in delivery workers called "Coochin" (Coupang Friends) played a major role. As of the end of July, the number of Coochin exceeded 10,000.
According to Coupang, Coochin directly employed by Coupang are guaranteed a 52-hour workweek over five days, 15 days of annual leave, severance pay, and are covered by the four major insurances including industrial accident insurance, as well as comprehensive health checkups and health care programs. Additionally, the sorting work, which has emerged as a key issue in the problem of courier driver overwork deaths, is handled by a separate workforce of 4,400 people.
A Coupang official said, “Like Samsung and Hyundai during the past economic growth period, Coupang is currently the only company achieving growth accompanied by employment,” and added, “We will continue to create quality working environments through ongoing hiring and investment.”
