[Asia Economy Reporter Kwon Jae-hee] The National League for Democracy (NLD), led by Myanmar's de facto leader State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi, won a landslide victory in the general election held on the 8th. As a result, the party secured the conditions to form a single-party government.
According to the tally announced at 9 a.m. (local time) on the 13th by the Myanmar Union Election Commission, the NLD secured 373 out of 440 seats in the upper and lower houses of the federal parliament where vote counting has been completed.
This far exceeds the 322 seats required to form a single-party government.
On the other hand, the main opposition party linked to the military, the Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP), won only 25 seats. Minor parties secured 42 seats.
The results for the remaining 35 seats, which have not yet been counted, are expected to be announced by the 13th at the earliest.
Meanwhile, there is attention on the results as there have been predictions that the NLD could secure up to 399 seats, surpassing the 390 seats it won in the 2015 general election that ended over 50 years of military dictatorship.
The NLD notably swept the central region, where the majority Bamar ethnic group is concentrated, including Myanmar's largest city Yangon, and reportedly performed well in Meiktila City, known as a "military city" due to the large population of military personnel and their families.
State Counsellor Suu Kyi also succeeded in winning a third term in the Komu constituency on the outskirts of Yangon.
Prior to this, the Union Election Commission rejected the USDP's demand for a re-election on the grounds of unfair elections on the 11th.
