[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Min Dosik] “We will take one step further toward a ‘labor-respecting’ society, carrying on the will of the beautiful youth Jeon Tae-il.”
On the 13th, Mayor Heo Seong-mu of Changwon City issued a memorial message on the 50th anniversary of martyr Jeon Tae-il.
Remembering the spirit of Jeon Tae-il, who sacrificed himself 50 years ago while shouting “Observe the Labor Standards Act” and “We are not machines,” Mayor Heo pledged to work toward creating a “country where everyone lives well together.”
In his memorial message, Mayor Heo said, “The cry of the beautiful youth Jeon Tae-il gave a great resonance to the world,” and recalled, “Facing truths we had not realized, people began to deeply contemplate human dignity and workers’ rights.”
He went on to point out, “There are still special-type workers and workers at businesses with fewer than five employees who fall outside the scope of the law and are not covered by the Labor Standards Act,” adding, “Fortunately, the Jeon Tae-il 3 Acts are currently under review in the National Assembly following a legislative petition signed by 100,000 people, and I am glad that such discussions are finally taking place.”
Mayor Heo promised, “Sustainable development is only possible when individual growth and social growth go hand in hand. Changwon City will strive to build a country where everyone lives well together.”
Meanwhile, Changwon City plans to display a memorial video containing the message, “On the 50th anniversary of martyr Jeon Tae-il, Changwon City will take one step further toward a ‘labor-respecting society,’” on the large electronic billboards at City Hall and Yangdeok-dong on the 13th and 14th.
