[Damyang = Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Yukbong] On the 10th, Damyang-gun, Jeollanam-do (Governor Choi Hyung-sik) announced that the ‘Taemok-ri Bamboo Grove’ located in Taemok-ri, Daejeon-myeon has been designated as Natural Monument No. 560 by the national government.
The ‘Taemok-ri Bamboo Grove,’ which is long formed along the Yeongsan River floodplain, is a large-scale grove naturally formed on sedimentary layers, which is rare in Korea, and is located within the Damyang river wetland.
It also provides habitat for wild flora and fauna such as the natural monuments hawk, common kestrel, and otter, making it a region of high value for environmental and ecological research and conservation.
Not only as a useful plant resource for traditional living culture but also as the first bamboo to be designated as a natural monument, it holds significant regional value.
A county official said, “Taking this designation as an opportunity, we will highlight the value of bamboo as a natural heritage and develop it as a tourism resource that combines natural heritage and historical cultural heritage in connection with nearby relics, river wetlands, and Damyang Obang-gil.”
Meanwhile, Damyang is known as the hometown of bamboo, accounting for about 34% of the national bamboo area. Since ancient times, bamboo products such as jukryeok, jukjeon, chaesang, fans, and large bamboo baskets were produced as tribute items. The ‘Gyuhap Chongseo’ also records the famous premium products of Damyang, including the chaejuk box and sedaesatgat.
